Talks
One evening on the second Thursday of every month. Each session is science talks, on medicine and on science and engineering, from people doing the work, pitched at A-level. Some evenings, the first among them, add a Personal Statement talk on how to write about what you heard.
Origins
Biomedical engineering (cancer research), medicine and the Personal Statement
Thursday 10 December 2026
Biomedical Engineering (Cancer Research)
How she came to biomedical engineering, the route from A-levels to a research lab, and what her cancer research involves. Aimed most at students heading for biomedical engineering, medicine and the life sciences.
Medicine
Medicine by the graduate route: a chemistry degree at UCL first, then the GAMSAT into medical school. For students weighing a science degree first against applying for medicine straight from school.
Personal Statements
How to sell yourself, on paper and in the interview room: what makes a Personal Statement stand out, what to leave out, and how to defend every line when an interviewer asks about it.
Every second Thursday of the month
One evening on the second Thursday of every month, with no exceptions, in London. Each evening stands on its own, with different speakers each time. Tickets are £30 per student a session.

What a student leaves with
Three fields, from the people in them
Biomedical engineering and medicine, each explained by someone working in it: how they got there and what the work is, at a level an A-level student can follow and question.
A written summary of every talk
Sent after the event, with references, so that anything a student writes about the research is accurate.
A way to write about it
The Personal Statement and interview talk, from someone who works at a London literary agency: how to sell yourself, what to leave out, and how to defend every line at interview.
Questions
Q01What is The Lab Result?
The Lab Result is a London company, founded in 2026 by Dr Lavan Ganeshkumar, that runs evening science talks for Year 12 and 13 students applying to university. Each session is twenty-minute talks from people working in medicine and in science and engineering, introduced and closed by Dr Lavan Ganeshkumar; some evenings, the first among them, add a Personal Statement talk. Every attendee receives a written summary of each talk. It is not a medical or laboratory service. Sessions run on the second Thursday of every month, and the first is Thursday 10 December 2026.
Q02Who is it for?
Year 12 and 13 students studying at least one of maths, further maths, physics, chemistry, biology or computer science, particularly those considering a STEM, engineering or medicine degree.
Q03Is any prior knowledge needed?
A-level study in a science or maths is enough. Speakers are briefed to assume that level and nothing more.
Q04How does it help a university application?
The UCAS Personal Statement asks why a student wants to study the course and what they have done outside the classroom to prepare. A real piece of science, heard from someone doing the work and understood properly, answers both. The talks and the written summaries are built for that, and some evenings add a Personal Statement talk.
Q05Does The Lab Result write Personal Statements?
No. Personal Statements must be the student's own work. The Lab Result provides the talks, and on some evenings a talk on how to write about them, never the text.
Q06How often does it run?
Every second Thursday of the month, in the evening, in London: Thursday 10 December 2026, then 14 January, 11 February and 11 March 2027, and on through the year. The full list of dates is on the Talks page.
Q07Do I have to come to every session?
No. Each evening is complete on its own. Come to one, or to several. Each session has different speakers, so Year 12 students can attend through the year and hear something new every time.
Q08How do I book, and what does it cost?
Tickets are £30 per student for each session; the first is Thursday 10 December 2026. Register once and we will email you each time a new date opens. The evening runs from 18:30 to 20:30 (doors 18:15) in Room 421, Roberts Building, UCL, London, WC1E 7JE; arrival details are emailed to ticket holders. Registered contacts receive the booking link first.
Q09Can a school bring a group?
Yes. Register as a teacher with the school name and the number of students in the message, and we will confirm places with you directly.
